San Quintin, Baja
Volcanoes, Oysters & the Pacific
Turn the FJ80 back toward Highway 1 and cross the peninsula toward San Quintín, where Baja delivers yet another transformation. Here the Pacific meets wetlands, agricultural valleys and ancient volcanic terrain. Spend the afternoon exploring the volcanic landscapes around Monte Ceniza and Punta Mazo, where trails climb through extinct volcanic formations overlooking the bay and surrounding wetlands. Kayaking and birdwatching add another side to the experience, while the rougher roads around the coast give the Land Cruiser plenty of opportunity to stretch its legs.
Then trade hiking boots for a proper meal. San Quintín is famous for its oysters and abalone, making this one of those rare expedition stops where getting filthy during the day should be followed by eating exceptionally well at night. Find fresh local seafood, watch the Pacific fade into sunset, and choose between a comfortable room or camping closer to the coast. This is the balance we're chasing on the entire expedition: drive hard, explore farther, eat well and sleep somewhere memorable.
