San Ignacio, Baja
An Oasis in the Desert
The road toward San Ignacio is classic Baja: enormous desert, distant mountains and long sections where the FJ80 seems impossibly small against the landscape. Then suddenly, green appears. Date palms surround a freshwater oasis and the old mission town emerges from a landscape that moments earlier seemed determined to support almost nothing. Park the Land Cruiser near the historic center, walk the plaza and slow down for a while. Some places reward movement; San Ignacio rewards staying still.
Depending on season and timing, the greater San Ignacio area also opens the door to one of Baja's great natural experiences: the gray-whale lagoons of the Pacific coast. Reaching more remote areas around the lagoon can involve significant additional driving, so fuel, water and daylight matter. Return to town afterward for a quiet dinner beneath the palms. After days of dust and corrugations, a small hotel, cold drink and shaded courtyard can feel every bit as luxurious as a five-star resort.
