Bahia Conception
Camp Where the Desert Touches the Sea
Few drives capture Baja better than approaching Bahía Concepción on Highway 1. Desert mountains fall toward brilliant turquoise water while small coves repeatedly appear beside the road. This is a day when mileage stops mattering. Turn off whenever something catches your attention. Beaches such as El Requesón, El Coyote and El Burro offer different versions of the same dream—calm water, desert mountains and campsites close enough to the sea that waves become the night's soundtrack. El Requesón is particularly distinctive for its sandbar and opportunities to explore on foot.
Park the FJ80, unload almost nothing and let the day become simple. Swim. Paddle. Hike. Cook beside the truck. Read something while pretending you're going to finish it. This isn't the day for a luxury hotel; the beachfront camp is the luxury. When darkness falls and the desert mountains become silhouettes across the bay, you'll understand why some travelers come to Bahía Concepción planning to stay one night and somehow lose a week.
