Mountains Behind Us, Islands Ahead
Follow Highway 1 south toward Loreto, where the Sierra de la Giganta rises dramatically behind the Sea of Cortez. After days dominated by driving, this is where we temporarily trade the Land Cruiser for the water. Get out early and explore the marine environment around Loreto's offshore islands, then return in the afternoon to wander the historic center and mission. If the mountains are calling louder than the sea, point the FJ80 inland and explore the roads leading toward the rugged Sierra.
Loreto also earns us a little indulgence. Check into a comfortable hotel, wash several days of Baja off the truck—and ourselves—and find a good dinner. Fresh seafood, a proper cocktail and clean sheets hit differently when you've spent previous nights sleeping beside a Land Cruiser. That's the philosophy of this expedition: we aren't escaping the finer things in life; we're earning them one dusty mile at a time.
