Punta Final is the kind of Baja destination that reminds you why we brought a Land Cruiser. Continue south along Highway 5 toward Bahía San Luis Gonzaga, then leave the comfort of the highway behind as the route works toward Punta Final and the remote edges of the Sea of Cortez. This is where the FJ80 begins earning the dust accumulating across its paint. Slow down, air down when conditions warrant it, and let the rougher roads dictate the pace rather than fighting them.
There isn't a checklist of attractions here—and that's the attraction. Find the water. Explore the coastline. Hike the surrounding desert hills. Swim when conditions allow, cook beside the truck and watch the mountains disappear into darkness behind you. Punta Final represents the Baja we came looking for: fewer reservations, fewer crowds and more stars than streetlights. Carry plenty of water, fuel and recovery equipment, respect private property and local access rules, and remember that self-sufficiency is what buys you the privilege of reaching places like this.
