San Felipe, Baja
Trade the Pacific for the Sea of Cortez
The drive toward San Felipe completely changes the personality of Baja. Mountains and desert replace the Pacific coastline before the brilliant blue water of the Sea of Cortez eventually appears on the horizon. After reaching town, point the Land Cruiser roughly 25 kilometers south on Highway 5 toward Valle de los Gigantes, where dirt roads wind through a surreal forest of enormous cardón cacti—some capable of reaching around 20 meters tall. It's exactly the kind of place the FJ80 was built for: windows down, tires in the dirt and absolutely no reason to hurry.
Come back toward the water as the afternoon heat begins to fade. San Felipe is about simple pleasures: seafood near the waterfront, something cold to drink, and a sunset over a sea that seems impossibly calm after a day in the desert. Grab a hotel when you want air-conditioning and a real shower, or find a legal established beach camp farther from town and let the Land Cruiser become home for the night. Tomorrow we leave convenience behind.
