Ensenada, Baja
Where the Pavement Meets the Pacific
Ensenada is where the Baja expedition begins to find its rhythm. Start the morning along the waterfront before pointing the FJ80 south toward Punta Banda and La Bufadora, where the Pacific crashes into the rocky coastline and the famous marine geyser can send water high above the cliffs. Hiking and kayaking are possible around the area, while those wanting more dirt beneath the tires can explore the backroads and coastal terrain surrounding Punta Banda. Ensenada is deeply connected to off-road culture—it is home territory for the Baja 1000—and it doesn't take long before you understand why.
But adventure doesn't mean sleeping in the dirt every night. Return to Ensenada, clean the dust off, and dive into one of Baja's great culinary cities. Fresh oysters, ceviche, fish tacos and local wine make this the perfect place to enjoy the finer side of the peninsula before the journey becomes considerably more remote. If time allows, make the run inland toward Valle de Guadalupe for vineyards, incredible food and a comfortable bed. Tomorrow the luxury gets packed away, the tires hit Highway 1, and the real Baja begins.
