Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Where the Road South Begins
There are worse places to begin an expedition than beneath the palms of Puerto Vallarta. Before pointing the FJ80 toward the mountains, we'll give ourselves time for the Malecón, the cobblestone streets of Zona Romántica, fresh seafood and one last Pacific sunset. A boat day or hike into the surrounding Sierra Madre provides the first taste of adventure, while a great resort and an afternoon beside the pool remind us that this journey isn't supposed to be punishment. We're chasing the places where adventure and the good life overlap.
Before departure, the Land Cruiser gets its first ritual inspection: engine oil, coolant, belts, hoses, brake fluid, tire pressures, spare tire, recovery equipment and cargo. Mexico will quickly trade coastal humidity for mountain elevation, and we want every mechanical question answered before leaving civilization. Clean clothes, good dinner, full tanks—and tomorrow the odometer starts counting south.
