Palenque, Mexico
Where the Jungle Swallows History
Palenque should feel like we've driven into another world. We'll arrive early at the archaeological zone and walk through Maya ruins rising from dense rainforest while howler monkeys provide the soundtrack. If time and road conditions cooperate, the surrounding waterfalls and jungle roads give the FJ80 a chance to finally leave polished highway behind.
Mud and water mean a different post-drive inspection: tires, brakes, wheel wells, underbody and air filter. We'll clean accumulated vegetation and mud before it dries into everything underneath the truck. Then comes a jungle hotel, cold shower, good dinner and the kind of sleep that only follows a day spent sweating through ruins.
