The road east begins turning unmistakably tropical. Villahermosa gives us a transitional base before pushing deeper into Maya country, with Parque-Museo La Venta offering a fascinating introduction to the enormous Olmec heads and ancient history of the region.
This is also where moisture management begins to matter. We'll inspect electrical connections, battery terminals and recovery gear while making sure nothing stored inside the FJ80 has begun trapping moisture. A pool, air-conditioning and an unhurried dinner aren't guilty pleasures here—they're how we reset before the jungle.
