San Cristobal, Mexico
Back Into Thin Air
From tropical Palenque we climb into the Chiapas highlands, and suddenly jackets come back out of the bags. San Cristóbal rewards walking: markets, colonial streets, cafés and indigenous culture surrounded by mountains. We'll use our second day for a carefully planned excursion into the surrounding landscape before returning to town for coffee, dinner and a quiet evening.
The climb is a perfect stress test for the FJ80. Cooling temperatures, transmission behavior, brakes and engine performance all get monitored carefully. Once parked, we'll check tire pressures again because elevation and temperature changes matter. The truck gets inspected while we recover with hot food and a comfortable bed.
