Get Dirty Again
León brings heat, colonial architecture and volcanoes. Cerro Negro gives us the opportunity to do something wonderfully unnecessary: hike an active volcanic landscape and come back down covered in black volcanic dust. The city itself provides the counterbalance—architecture, food and slow evenings after days designed to elevate the heart rate.
Volcanic dust is equally unfriendly to machinery, so the FJ80 gets special attention afterward. Air filter, radiator, brakes and underbody are inspected and cleaned before we continue. We do roughly the same thing to ourselves: shower, hydrate, find a good meal and sleep somewhere comfortable.
