Ushuaia, Argentina — South America Overland Guide

Aug 16, 2026 | posted by Chris Vasquez

Drive from Río Grande: approximately 3.5–4 hrs. Follow Ruta 3 south through forests, Garibaldi Pass and lake country until the road drops toward the Beagle Channel and the end of the continent. This stage is designed around the expedition rule that we never ask the driver—or our 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series—to grind through more than six hours of actual driving in a day. The reward at Ushuaia is Tierra del Fuego National Park, Beagle Channel, Martial Glacier and the mountains surrounding Ushuaia. The route itself is part of the story: we are watching South America change through the windshield rather than flying over the difficult pieces.

Adventure & stay: Hike coastal and forest trails, take a Beagle Channel boat trip and drive the final legal roads with no need to rush anywhere. Our preferred stay is Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa. A five-star resort inside the Cerro Alarkén reserve with sweeping Beagle Channel views, pools and the perfect spa ending to the expedition. The idea is never luxury for luxury’s sake; it is recovery that lets us get back outside the next morning. A real bed, a hot shower, a spa or a good meal can be just as important to a long overland expedition as another night under canvas.

Land Cruiser check & daily equipment: Give the Land Cruiser a full post-expedition inspection: fluids, leaks, tires, wheel bearings, suspension, brakes, driveline and every fastener that carried us south. For this leg we want clean clothes, hiking layers, camera gear, a celebratory bottle, maintenance logbook and enough energy for one last walk at the end of the world. The 100 Series is being used exactly as Toyota intended—quiet and comfortable on pavement, full-time four-wheel drive ready when the road turns to gravel, and mechanically conservative enough that preventative checks remain more important than dramatic modifications. We leave Ushuaia only when both the crew and the truck are ready.
