Punta Arenas, Chile — South America Overland Guide

Aug 16, 2026 | posted by Chris Vasquez

Drive from Puerto Natales: approximately 3 hrs. Follow the open road south toward the Strait of Magellan, watching forest thin and wind take control of the landscape. This stage is designed around the expedition rule that we never ask the driver—or our 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series—to grind through more than six hours of actual driving in a day. The reward at Punta Arenas is Strait of Magellan, historic Punta Arenas, penguin excursion gateways and coastal steppe. The route itself is part of the story: we are watching South America change through the windshield rather than flying over the difficult pieces.

Adventure & stay: Walk the waterfront, arrange a wildlife excursion and use town for the final large resupply before Tierra del Fuego. Our preferred stay is Hotel Cabo de Hornos or a comfortable upscale central hotel. A polished city stay with a good restaurant is ideal before ferries, borders and the final island push. The idea is never luxury for luxury’s sake; it is recovery that lets us get back outside the next morning. A real bed, a hot shower, a spa or a good meal can be just as important to a long overland expedition as another night under canvas.

Land Cruiser check & daily equipment: Perform a complete pre-Tierra-del-Fuego check: fluids, tires, spare, battery, heater, wipers and fuel range. For this leg we want cold-weather clothing, ferry documents, food reserve, fuel strategy, tire repair supplies and windshield washer rated for freezing temperatures. The 100 Series is being used exactly as Toyota intended—quiet and comfortable on pavement, full-time four-wheel drive ready when the road turns to gravel, and mechanically conservative enough that preventative checks remain more important than dramatic modifications. We leave Punta Arenas only when both the crew and the truck are ready.
