Puerto Río Tranquilo, Chile — South America Overland Guide
Drive from Coyhaique: approximately 5–6 hrs. Drive south past Cerro Castillo on Ruta 7, where asphalt increasingly gives way to gravel and Lago General Carrera appears in impossible shades of blue. This stage is designed around the expedition rule that we never ask the driver—or our 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series—to grind through more than six hours of actual driving in a day. The reward at Puerto Río Tranquilo is Marble Caves, Lago General Carrera and Cerro Castillo country. The route itself is part of the story: we are watching South America change through the windshield rather than flying over the difficult pieces.
Adventure & stay: Take a boat or kayak tour to the marble formations and explore short lakeside trails. Our preferred stay is Mallin Colorado Ecolodge or a quality lakeside cabin. A small nature lodge with a fireplace and lake view is exactly right after a hard gravel day. The idea is never luxury for luxury’s sake; it is recovery that lets us get back outside the next morning. A real bed, a hot shower, a spa or a good meal can be just as important to a long overland expedition as another night under canvas.
Land Cruiser check & daily equipment: Inspect tires for sharp-rock damage, wheel bearings, shocks and underbody; clean dust from air intake and cabin seals. For this leg we want compressor, two tire repair methods, full-size spare, warm lake layers, dry bags and a high-output headlamp. The 100 Series is being used exactly as Toyota intended—quiet and comfortable on pavement, full-time four-wheel drive ready when the road turns to gravel, and mechanically conservative enough that preventative checks remain more important than dramatic modifications. We leave Puerto Río Tranquilo only when both the crew and the truck are ready.
