Chile Chico, Chile — South America Overland Guide
Drive from Cochrane: approximately 5.5–6 hrs. Take the spectacular gravel route around Lago General Carrera toward the Argentine border, a road where the views demand constant photo stops and the driver demands concentration. This stage is designed around the expedition rule that we never ask the driver—or our 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series—to grind through more than six hours of actual driving in a day. The reward at Chile Chico is Lago General Carrera, Jeinimeni sector of Patagonia National Park and arid steppe meeting turquoise water. The route itself is part of the story: we are watching South America change through the windshield rather than flying over the difficult pieces.
Adventure & stay: Hike in the Jeinimeni landscape, explore lakeshore tracks conservatively and prepare border paperwork. Our preferred stay is Hacienda Tres Lagos area lodging or a secure Chile Chico hotel. Expect boutique simplicity rather than grand luxury; the lake and silence are the real five-star features. The idea is never luxury for luxury’s sake; it is recovery that lets us get back outside the next morning. A real bed, a hot shower, a spa or a good meal can be just as important to a long overland expedition as another night under canvas.
Land Cruiser check & daily equipment: Inspect tires and wheel nuts after the rough lake road, top fuel and check all travel documents before crossing Argentina. For this leg we want offline maps, satellite messenger, wind layers, spare tire plugs, compressor and document copies. The 100 Series is being used exactly as Toyota intended—quiet and comfortable on pavement, full-time four-wheel drive ready when the road turns to gravel, and mechanically conservative enough that preventative checks remain more important than dramatic modifications. We leave Chile Chico only when both the crew and the truck are ready.
