Baños, Ecuador — South America Overland Guide

Aug 16, 2026 | posted by Chris Vasquez

Drive from Quito: approximately 3–4 hrs. Follow E35 and the route toward Ambato before dropping into the gorge country around Baños, where the Andes begin spilling toward the Amazon. This stage is designed around the expedition rule that we never ask the driver—or our 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series—to grind through more than six hours of actual driving in a day. The reward at Baños is Ruta de las Cascadas, Pailón del Diablo, Tungurahua views and the Pastaza River canyon. The route itself is part of the story: we are watching South America change through the windshield rather than flying over the difficult pieces.

Adventure & stay: Bike or drive the waterfall route, hike to viewpoints and finish with thermal water instead of another night behind the wheel. Our preferred stay is Luna Volcán Adventure SPA or Samari Spa Resort. Both pair real spa recovery with immediate access to waterfalls, canyon roads and mountain air. The idea is never luxury for luxury’s sake; it is recovery that lets us get back outside the next morning. A real bed, a hot shower, a spa or a good meal can be just as important to a long overland expedition as another night under canvas.

Land Cruiser check & daily equipment: Mud and spray call for a brake inspection, clean air intake and a look at electrical connectors; re-check tire pressure after elevation changes. For this leg we want waterproof shell, dry bags, quick-dry clothing, sandals, tow strap and traction boards if exploring wet unpaved side roads. The 100 Series is being used exactly as Toyota intended—quiet and comfortable on pavement, full-time four-wheel drive ready when the road turns to gravel, and mechanically conservative enough that preventative checks remain more important than dramatic modifications. We leave Baños only when both the crew and the truck are ready.
