Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

Crossing the First Big Border
Crossing into Guatemala changes the rhythm. Border days aren't mileage days; they're patience days. Once the temporary vehicle paperwork is handled and the FJ80 is legally across, we'll climb toward Quetzaltenango—Xela—surrounded by Guatemala's volcanic highlands.
Hot springs and mountain hiking make Xela an ideal first stop because recovery and adventure can occupy the same day. After the border, we'll verify paperwork, insurance, fuel availability and vehicle security before inspecting tires and suspension after the climb. The evening should be intentionally quiet. Eat well, stretch, sleep and let tomorrow be tomorrow.
