Stewart, British Columbia — Chapter 37: The Road to Prudhoe Bay

Aug 17, 2026 | posted by Chris Vasquez

The odometer keeps climbing north, but this chapter changes the scale of the journey. Chapter 37 of 60 brings us to Stewart, British Columbia. Meziadin → Stewart: about 1 hour, but Highway 37A deserves the whole day. We are deliberately refusing to race to Alaska; the point is to feel the country change beneath the tires—from desert and canyon to Rockies, boreal forest and eventually tundra. The 1984 FJ60 makes that pace feel right: mechanical, unhurried and always ready for a road that looks more interesting than the one on the map.

We build the day around Bear Glacier, waterfalls and Portland Canal, but leave room for the unplanned overlook, trail, diner or local recommendation that turns a route into a story. Our aspirational stay is Ripley Creek Inn. Sometimes that means genuine five-star service; farther north, luxury becomes excellent food, a warm room, secure parking and the ability to recover properly after a long day outside.

The journal doubles as a mechanical log. At this stage we concentrate on stone damage, tire cuts, shocks and radiator face. We do not wait for a warning light or roadside failure; every arrival gets a walk-around, a look underneath and a few quiet minutes listening for anything that changed during the day. Travelers following the route should keep camera gear, rain shell, bear spray and compressor readily accessible. Fuel, weather, park access and road conditions deserve a fresh check each morning, especially once services begin thinning in Canada, Yukon and northern Alaska.

What stays with us about Stewart, British Columbia is the contrast: an old Land Cruiser outside a beautiful hotel, trail gear beside clean sheets, and tomorrow's route spread across the table over dinner. We are chasing hard roads without turning the trip into an endurance contest. Good food, sleep and occasional indulgence are part of the preparation—they keep the crew sharp enough to enjoy the difficult days rather than merely survive them. Tomorrow the nose points north again, and everything we learned here travels with us.
